They know Lilia in Missouri

The Kalaheo name is hard to pronounce for some mainlanders, but at the annual AECT International Student Media Festival (ISMF), our school name is synonymous with quality media production. Last November while we were in Dallas at the ISMF to pick up eight new awards, the sponsors of a Missouri film festival looked us up and invited us to enter their festival. In December we sent six student productions to St. Louis, Missouri. Three of those entries won. Spaghetti Dinner Promo took first place, Junior Prom Promo won 2nd place and Zap-O-Matic 2000 was a finalist.

What did all three of these have in common? The answer is Lilia! Lilia was involved in all three productions. Her influence in several production capacities helped to produce these winners at the St. Louis Student Film Festival.

They know Lilia in Missouri

"I want to be a filmmaker!" exclaims the effervescent Student Body President, Lilia Glauberman. If her early efforts are any indication, she has the making to do just that. In her three years as a student in the Communications Arts Learning Center she has been involved with eleven productions, seven of which went on to win national recognition for excellence. Hydrochloric Hottie (director/ screen writer/ music/ editing), Junior Prom (director/ screen writer), Spaghetti Dinner 1 (director/ screen writer /music), Spaghetti dinner 2 (director/ screen writer), CommArts Promo (acting), VTV (acting), Zap-O-Matic 2000 (screen writer/acting), Gooligan's Island (director/ screen writer/ acting/ editing/ music), Outdoor Circle (acting/ production).
In the fall of 2002 Lilia undertook one of her most ambitious films. Gooligan's Island is a spoof of the famous TV series whose establishing location shot of Coconut Island is in Kaneohe Bay, a short distance from our school. Lilia and fellow CommArts buddy Ashley Fowler produced and directed this originally scripted, multi location film. It has yet to go to the festival competition, but it has the ear marks of a winner.
"Much of the vision of the film is Lilia" says Ashley. "It was a lot of work. Lilia pushed us to get finished and got the most out of our student actors."
Lilia has applied to several colleges on the mainland that offer film programs. Her first choice is Chapman College in California, where Kalaheo alumnae Wendy Cross graduated. Wendy is now working in media production in L. A. We wont be surprised to hear the same of Lilia one day. Good luck Lilia!
