The Comm Arts Legacy:
A little about comm arts, and Mr. & Mrs. Connelly.
• John & Marilyn currently direct and team
teach the highly successful Communication Arts Learning Center at
Kalaheo High School, Kailua Hawaii.
• Since they founded this Media "magnet-type"
program in 1986 their students have been recognized locally and nationally,
winning more than 300 awards for excellence in media production.
• John & Marilyn currently Cochair, with
Bob Utt of Missouri, the International Student Media Festival hosted
annually by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology
(www.aect.org)
• 3 Decades teaching media to students grades
5-12
• 2 decades of freelance media production with
their company J&M Media Productions.
• 1 decade conducting Media Workshops and lectures
for educators throughout the State of Hawaii.
• Their program was written up in Cable in the
Classroom magazine (Aug '92 issue)
• Cover Story, Midweek magazine (June '93 issue)
• Hawaii International Film Festival Curriculum
Guide Film Literacy; A Film-Viewing Primer. CoAuthored by John and
Marilyn (1990; revised 1998)
• Media Education, A Curriculum Framework John
and Marilyn lead writers for the State of Hawaii • Department

• Marilyn is a professional media editor with
a specialty in music, including teaching students how to write original
scores for media projects.
• Marilyn produces a weekly half-hour cable show
Student Videos, seen throughout the State of Hawaii.
• John received his MA in Communications, BYU
- Provo, 1978; BA in English with minor in Communication Arts Loyola
University 1965.
• Master's thesis:A Study of Cross-Modal Reinforcement
in Mediated Instruction: A Comparison of the Learning Advantages of
Relevant Non- Redundant Cues with those of Redundant Cues. (BYU Provo

• Hawaii State Department of Education Windward
District Teacher of the Year 1991
• The Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge Teacher
of Excellence Award 1993.
• The Equus Cabullus Award for Service Above and
Beyond, Kalaheo High School 1995.
• John and Marilyn were married in 1965 and have
six children and seven grandchildren - (#8 & 9 expected in '99.)
